We tested 5 top-rated sleep gadgets over 5 months. Which one is currently #1?
Waking up in the middle of the night. Again and again.
That’s the #1 sleep issue people reported in our recent survey of 3,400+ adults.
Second place?
“I can’t fall asleep even when I’m tired.”
So we ran a 5-month test with 37 people struggling with stress-related insomnia, burnout, mid-night wakeups, or overthinking at night.
The goal: find the most effective device to finally sleep through the night — naturally.
We tested:
-
Vagus nerve stimulation: Pulsetto
-
Vibration-based relaxation: Sensate
-
Eye-based stress relief: Therabody SmartGoggles
-
Light-based therapy: MitoPRO X 300 Red Light Therapy Panel
-
Brainwave stimulation: Somnee
Each device was tested for exactly 4 weeks by multiple users over a 5-month period.
We tracked results using Oura Ring sleep data and self-reports. We looked at:
- How long it took to fall asleep
- Wakeups per night
- Deep sleep and overall sleep score improvement
- Ease of use and setup
🥇 #1 — Pulsetto
The only device that consistently reduced wakeups and helped us fall asleep faster
What it is
A lightweight neckband that delivers vagus nerve stimulation — gentle electrical signals sent to both sides of your neck, where the vagus nerve is closest to the surface.
How it felt
This was the only device that made people say “I’m finally sleeping through the night.” It worked fast, felt calming within minutes, and took no effort. Testers said it helped them fall asleep quicker — and stay asleep longer.
💸 Price: $296 (normally $496)
📊 Oura data
- Sleep score: +18%
- Wakeups: ↓ 42%
- Time to sleep: ↓ 54%
- Deep sleep: ↑ 27%
Pros
- Works in as few as 4 minutes
- Stimulates both sides of the neck at once for faster results
- Hands-free and effortless to use, so you can go about your nightly routine like brushing your teeth
- Has programs for sleep, stress, anxiety, and pain — so you can go after the root cause of your sleep problem and finally rest better
Cons
- Not recommended for people with pacemakers or electrical implants
#2 — Sensate
Simple and soothing, but sleep results vary
What it is
A chest device that vibrates while playing calming audio to create a relaxation effect.
How it felt
The buzzing chest sensation felt great and made bedtime more relaxing. But while it helped people wind down, it didn’t always lead to better sleep. More of a calm-down ritual than a true sleep fix.
💸 Price: $299
📊 Oura data
- Sleep score: +11%
- Wakeups: ↓ 18%
- Time to sleep: ↓ 19%
- Deep sleep: ↑ 10%
Pros
- Cool design and relaxing vibration experience
- Pairs well with guided meditation or calming playlists
Cons
- Must lie still on your back
- Works well for winding down, but may not improve deep sleep for everyone
#3 — Therabody SmartGoggles
Great for stress relief, light on sleep gains
What it is
A high-tech eye mask that combines heat, massage, and vibration — and adjusts to your heart rate in real time.
How it felt
People loved the face massage and tension relief. It helped them let go of stress, but sleep results were hit or miss. Great for winding down, but less consistent on deeper sleep.
💸 Price: $199
📊 Oura data
- Sleep score: +8%
- Wakeups: ↓ 13%
- Time to sleep: ↓ 17%
- Deep sleep: ↑ 7%
Pros
- Eases tension with a mix of heat and vibration
- Tracks your heart rate to adapt in real-time
- Great for relaxing before bed
Cons
- Effects feel short-term — it helps you relax, but doesn’t always translate to deeper sleep
- Some users found the fit awkward depending on face shape
#4 — MitoPRO X 300 Red Light Therapy Panel
Passive but powerful — a solid biohacking option
What it is
A portable panel that emits red and near-infrared light to reduce stress, inflammation, and support melatonin production.
How it felt
You don’t feel much during the session, but the payoff comes later. With regular use, some noticed better relaxation before bed and reduced inflammation. It’s subtle but builds over time.
💸 Price: $449
📊 Oura data
- Sleep score: +9%
- Wakeups: ↓ 15%
- Time to sleep: ↓ 22%
- Deep sleep: ↑ 8%
Pros
- No wearables — just sit near it 10–15 minutes before bed
- May help your body produce more melatonin naturally
- Also used by athletes to support joint and muscle recovery
Cons
- Results take time — you need to use it consistently over several weeks to see real changes
#5 — Somnee Smart Sleep Headband
Clinical-grade stimulation, but a bit involved
What it is
A brain-sensing headband that sends gentle electrical pulses to help you fall asleep and stay asleep longer.
How it felt
Testers called it the most “serious” tool. It felt clinical at first but delivered results — especially for deeper sleep — once they got the hang of it.
💸 Price: $549
📊 Oura data
- Sleep score: +10%
- Wakeups: ↓ 19%
- Time to sleep: ↓ 25%
- Deep sleep: ↑ 12%
Pros
- Feels like a science-grade tool
- Just 15 minutes a night before bed
- Stimulates your brain into deeper, more restorative sleep
Cons
- App setup and calibration can feel a bit technical at first
- Pricier than most relaxation devices
Final word
Every device we tested helped in some small way — but only one gave us real, measurable sleep gains that held up night after night.
Pulsetto reduced wakeups by 42%. Helped us fall asleep twice as fast. Increased deep sleep by 27%. And actually retrained our bodies to stay asleep — without complicated routines or passive tools.
If you’ve tried everything and still wake up at 3 AM, this is the one device we’d recommend.
